A few solutions listed below will certainly work from Unix or Linux machines. Some might to a certain degree also appear to work on a PC.
Internet - through application:
- Fixation will allow you to connect to a FICS server.
- Jin 2.12 will allow you to connect to a FICS server.
- Chessic will allow you to connect to the ICC server. Poor graphics.
- Big-bang chess will allow you to connect to a custom chess server.
- Chessworks will allow you to contact to a custom chess server. Poor graphics.
- Project Gridlock will allow you to contact to a custom chess server. The chess server is also available.

Internet - through a browser:
Normally, the operating system one is using is not important. However, sometimes things do not work as expected. Therefor this table should guide you.
All above solutions might also work on a PC. Use at own risk from a PC though.
E-mail:
- Big-bang chess will allow you to play chess by e-mail.
- Crafty will allow you to play chess by e-mail. (difficult configuration)
Network - through application:
These solutions stand or fall with the availability of other players. Where the FICS servers constantly have more than 100 players online, the private chess servers do not have many players online. With point to point connections, you will have the burden of difficult opponent finding.
- Big-bang chess will allow you to connect to a chess opponent. Will use Rendez-vous and iChat.
- Chessworks will allow you to connect to a chessworks server.
- Project Gridlock will allow you to contact to a project gridlock chess server. The chess server is also available.
